Most of the spring breakers here are early bird dinner types, but unlike Morty Seinfeld, they seem to sleep later too. I am the only one out here. I hear mostly light waves, a little wind, and the muted traffic noise from Gulf Boulevard a few hundred yards away.

No Early Risers
One advantage of being a poor sleeper is that I have a lot of time. I've been awake on and off -- mostly on -- since about 3:30. Shortly after 6, I went down to the lobby to get the Tampa Bay Times but the Sunday edition was still in the box. If I'd had a jacket on, I could have walked to the 7-11, but instead I came back upstairs and struggled with the vertical blinds in the dark. Finally, I just decided to open the sliding door to the deck and slip through, as quietly (not very) as I could.
It feels like an early summer morning at "the lake" in Minnesota. Kind of cold, actually, just right for my fleece jacket but wrong for shorts. Fortunately, the laptop is keeping my legs warm. I just heard my first birds (wish I'd brought the handy birdsong guide Marilyn gave me a few years ago) and the sky may be just a little lighter.

Sunrise Beach Pool Evaluation
I've sum in hundreds of pools and I consider myself something of an expert on pools. And this one is great! Just the write temperature (warm without being hot), a good size, not too much chlorine, not too many people. This evening Bob and I shared the pool with a boy of 12 or so. The air was very chilly, so it was hard to get out of the water, but otherwise the swim was perfect.
This afternoon the older set (i.e., in our age group) sat out in the sun around the pool, but I really prefer to swim in the evening when others are done for the day. It was a lovely end to a great day.

Faith and Presidential Politics
In some Catholic churches today even the "Prayers of the Faithful" are written to deliver a strongly political, anti-President Obama message. The petitions -- often thinly disguised attacks on the president and his administration -- fall only a little short of a demand to vote against all Democrats in November and instead elect Republicans who have signed on various "dotted lines" for political expediency. I find the intrusion of politics into my weekly worship both offensive and discouraging.
From the parish bulletin, I had decided that St. John Vianney Church leans too far right to be comfortable, and I somewhat reluctantly took my place in the pew this morning. Instead, I was surprised and delighted by an enthusiastic (though not great) choir and strong cantor. The presider skillfully navigated the choppy "and with your spirit" waters, cleverly selecting options that avoided the new translation of the Mass wherever possible. The petitions were prayers inspired by the readings of the day. The homily, short and delivered in a strong voice, spoke of our decades long failure to eradicate violence from American and world culture. For the first time in a long while, my hour at Mass was both prayerful and uplifting.
It was impossible to distinguish parishioners from visitors and I felt that Democrats and Republicans can set aside differences and come together to pray on Sunday morning. I felt very happy to belong to the universal church.
The sun shone brightly as we walked out into the brilliance of a Florida Sunday morning.

St. Pete Beach
I worked hard last week, becoming more and more manic as the week came to an end. By Thursday evening, I was exhausted and fell asleep quite easily. However, I woke at 3 a.m. Friday morning and got up about an hour later because I knew that I would never get back to sleep. Friday evening I was so wired that I couldn't fall asleep at al until some time after 1 a.m. and was wide awake by 3:45 this morning, an hour before the cab arrived to take us to the airport. No matter! We're here.
Great day for flying. The moon was high in the sky just before sunrise, almost full and quite beautiful. We left on time at 7:05 and the flight was uneventful. That's a good thing. We arrived in Tampa under an overcast sky and only warmish weather. More like spring than summer, not quite 80 degrees. The only unforeseen hitch was the car rental, off site rather than at the airport counter. I had a minor tantrum but the off airport location turned out to be a good thing. We waited only a few minutes and were soon tooling south in our beige (goldish tan?) Toyota Corolla. 275 seemed less daunting than a year ago. I guess it is easier to return to a destination that is at least somewhat familiar.
The Gulf of Mexico sparkled as the sun peaked out in the early afternoon. We checked in, unpacked, enjoyed a beverage on the deck as we enjoyed the wonderful view. The pool is immediately below, a little off to the right. Before us, the view of Boca Ciega Bay is spectacular. No dolphins yet, but lots of birds and activity on the water.
Did some grocery shopping and had a deli supper, I had forgotten how delicious the fruit and vegetables are in Florida. Hit the pool and was surprised at the chill in the evening air when I got out of the water. It's nearly 9:30 now and I'm ready for bed. I think I will sleep tonight!

Florida!
The most exciting trip planning task is creating the blog. This year we're going back to beautiful St Pete Beach on the Gulf Coast. Flying into Tampa next Saturday for two weeks -- my first two-week vacation since 1999.
Pied-à-terre is The Sunrise Resort on Boca Ciega Bay. Take a tour of Unit 304, overlooking the bay. My camera will be ready to capture the dolphins and manatees I expect to see from our balcony. I had hoped for a higher unit, so that we would also have a good view of the Gulf of Mexico on the west side of the building, but we vacillated a little before plunking down a deposit on the hefty rental fee for two weeks, and lost the opportunity for a higher condo. No matter: photos will be better lower in the building.
Since we always travel during the very high season, there were no deals to be found, except perhaps on the car (I rebook about once a week and now have a $280 booking on an intermediate vehicle "Toyota Corolla or similar", booked through www.carrentals.com.
Chris has graciously accepted the volunteer housesitting position once again. I don't think we could leave our little Russian Blue without a live-in caregiver for so long, and of course an occupied house is a safety precaution as well.
